Website costs & scope

How much should a small-business website cost in the UK?

Compare quotes by scope, running costs and ownership, with clear AllVia-AI prices and a practical first-year budget example.

Start with the job the website must do.

A small-business website should cost enough to cover its agreed design, content, functionality, testing and handover. There is no single useful price for every UK business. A five-page service website, an online shop and a customer portal solve different problems.

At AllVia-AI, standalone builds currently start at £799 for Starter, £1,499 for Growth and £2,999 for Premium. Enterprise builds start at £6,000. These are our offers, not UK market averages. Prices exclude VAT where applicable; final scope and third-party costs need confirming in a proposal.

Compare what each quote delivers before comparing its headline figure. A cheaper quote can be appropriate for a simpler brief. A higher fee needs a clear explanation of the additional work.

Compare deliverables, not just page counts.

Start with the action visitors should take: request a quote, book an appointment, buy a product or sign in to a service. Then list the pages and systems needed to support it. Five pages with supplied text and a straightforward form are a different workload from five pages needing research, copywriting and booking-system integration.

  • Design: an adapted theme or a bespoke direction? How many review rounds?
  • Content: who supplies copy, images and product information, and who enters them?
  • Functionality: an enquiry form, an external booking link or a custom workflow?
  • Launch: mobile checks, redirects, domain setup and a working enquiry or purchase journey?
  • Handover: account access, editing guidance and a defined period for resolving launch issues?

Ask for these answers in writing. “SEO included” and “fully responsive” are not detailed acceptance criteria. Agree which pages are covered and what will be checked.

Separate the build fee from running costs.

A one-off build fee is only part of the budget. List hosting, domain renewal, maintenance, licences, paid apps and any transaction fees separately. Ask which costs continue if you stop using the agency.

Shopify publishes subscription plans and payment-related charges, with different billing options and features. Stripe also publishes fees that depend on the payment method and other factors. Those are provider costs, separate from an agency’s implementation work.[1][2] Check the current terms for your chosen setup rather than assuming a build fee includes them.

AllVia-AI’s optional Care Plan is £40/month and includes hosting, minor content updates, monthly security checks, a monthly blog article and an annual SEO review. It has a three-month minimum, followed by 30 days’ written notice. Additional functionality and larger redesigns are quoted separately.

Why does selling online change the quote?

An online shop needs its catalogue, payment process and fulfilment workflow to agree. Product variants, delivery rules, discounts, order emails and refunds create work that a simple information website may not need.

Even with a ready-made commerce platform, Shopify’s launch checklist calls for testing successful and failed transactions, cancellations, refunds and fulfilment.[3] Using a platform reduces custom engineering; it does not remove configuration and testing.

Our recommendation is to specify products, options, delivery regions and integrations before seeking a fixed price. If your requirements fit an established platform, ask for that option as well as any bespoke proposal. A straightforward shop does not automatically need an enterprise platform.

Does AI make a professional build cheaper?

AI can reduce time spent drafting layouts, code and first-pass content. The saving depends on how much of the project can safely reuse established patterns. It does not decide your delivery rules, verify every product entry or take responsibility for an incorrect payment journey.

We recommend evaluating the finished scope and testing, rather than paying for a particular tool or assuming every generated page needs the same amount of work. Ask how the agency checks generated content and code, and who resolves defects. Faster production should make the service more efficient; it should not justify skipping validation.

What should protection and SEO include?

Ask how forms are protected from automated spam, where enquiries are sent and what happens when sending fails. AllVia-AI includes managed enquiry spam protection with every website. It helps reduce automated spam, but cannot guarantee every enquiry is genuine.

For search foundations, ask about page titles, useful content, internal links and crawlability. Google’s guidance does not promise that following a checklist will secure indexing or a first-place ranking.[4] Separate agreed technical work from promises about results the supplier cannot control.

Security checks and maintenance also need a defined scope. A website should not be sold as permanently bug-free or immune to attack.

Use a short brief to get comparable quotes.

Send each supplier the same brief: your customer, desired action, required pages, supplied content, integrations and target launch window. Ask them to mark assumptions and exclusions. Check when the schedule starts and whether it depends on receiving content or payment-provider approval.

Before accepting, confirm who controls the domain, hosting, platform accounts and source files; what is licensed rather than owned; how ongoing changes are priced; and how a future handover works. For managed spam protection, arrange replacement verification keys and test the forms before retiring the previous setup.

Choose the smallest scope that reliably supports the business need. Add complexity when it has a clear purpose, not simply because a feature is available.
